Overview

Receiving is the process of bringing physical material into the MetisLogic inventory system. Every item that will be used in a build — whether it was consigned, arrived yesterday on a purchase order, or has been sitting on a shelf for months — needs to pass through Receiving before MetisLogic can track it, allocate it, or include it in a kit.

Receiving is also the foundation of everything that comes after it. The question What do we have? — the first question MetisLogic helps you answer — only has a reliable answer if your inventory is accurate. And inventory is only accurate if everything that comes through the door gets received correctly. A fast, unreliable receiving process produces inventory data you can't trust. A slow, reliable one creates a bottleneck that means parts sit untracked while jobs wait. MetisLogic is designed to be both — fast enough that nothing sits in a receiving queue, and reliable enough that what's in the system reflects what's on the shelf.

The scope of Receiving is intentionally broad. It covers purchased components matched to a PO, customer-supplied consignment parts, spec buys that aren't tied to a specific job, and existing warehouse stock that predates your MetisLogic deployment. If it goes on a shelf and you want the system to know about it, it goes through Receiving.

Purpose-built receiving systems exist in the EMS space, but they tend to be expensive, difficult to service, and unreliable at the one thing they exist to do — reading distributor labels. When a system fails to capture a label correctly more often than it succeeds, it creates more work than it saves: operators have to intervene, resolve errors, and develop workarounds that undermine the whole point of having a system.

MetisLogic takes a different approach. Receiving runs on a standard PC or Mac with a barcode scanner, an inexpensive off-the-shelf webcam, and a Zebra label printer — hardware most shops already own or can acquire and replace without a capital approval. There is no proprietary hardware to maintain, no vendor to call for service, and no lock-in.

Reliability comes from the software, not from specialized hardware. MetisLogic reads distributor labels using a combination of barcode scanning, OCR, and AI-assisted interpretation — automatically extracting MPN, manufacturer, quantity, date code, lot code, and PO number from whatever the distributor put on the label. When a barcode is insufficient, the system falls back to text recognition. The result is accurate data capture across the full range of distributor label formats, without operator intervention in the common case.

Speed follows from reliability. When the system gets it right the first time, operators can move through a shipment without stopping to correct errors or re-scan. Typical throughput is two to three packages per minute — scan, confirm, print a label, place in inventory. A new operator can be productive in a single session.
